Outrage: Small traders take to the streets in Rajkot as police close Wednesday market, woman sleeps on road and stops vehicle to protest

Traders rushed to the Division Police Station and demanded that the market continue on Wednesday

The market is filled every Wednesday on Kotharia Road in Rajkot. But small traders took to the streets and protested when the market was closed Wednesday by police today due to the Corona epidemic.

The women sat in the middle of the road and attacked the police. One woman even fell asleep on the road and stopped the vehicles. The matter was later dropped when the traders reached the A-Division police station and submitted to continue the market on Wednesday.

Police also shut down businesses that operate one day a week

This has been going on for the last eight months, small traders said. We only have one day of business a week and that also allows the police to shut down. So how can we fill the stomachs of our children. Every Wednesday, the police take our belongings and threaten the elderly. We are poor people and we make a living by selling goods to people at cheap prices. Yet the cops are coming and doing us injustice.

"We don't steal or sell alcohol," said one woman trader. We sweat and eat bread. At seven o'clock in the morning we sit down to do business and at 11 or 12 o'clock at night we gather for dinner. From the market we sell utensils and bring clothes and we sell those clothes. But the police do not allow us to do business. Our demand is to continue our Wednesday market. The cops speak abusive words and kill.
